Statue of Dupleix
The statue of Dupleix is a historic monument and is housed in the Children’s park in Pondicherry. This statue was installed in the year 1870 by the French government.
Joseph Francois Dupleix was the then Governor of Pondicherry and the town prospered under him. He was also the governor general of the French establishment in India.
He trained troops and infantrymen. Under one of those infantrymen was the great warrior and king, Hyder Ali. Dupleix was known to have invested most of his private possessions to aid for his public reforms.
Dupleix was an integral part of the French settlement in India especially in Pondicherry. The present statue of Dupleix in Pondicherry was erected on 1870 after the French government realized his efforts and work in India. Two statues were erected in his honor, one in Pondicherry and the other can be seen in France.
