Aayi Mandapam
Situated in the center of the Bharati Park in Pondicherry, the Aayi Mandapam also known as the Park monument is a historic monument in south India. It is one of the best monuments to visit in Pondicherry.
It was built during the reign of Napoleon III in 16th century in honor of a female courtesan named ‘Aayi’. According to lore, Aayi destroyed her own house and built a well for the people. This well was the one that helped the French during a water shortage in Pondicherry.
The monument is built in the French architectural style and is housed in the center of the park. The monument was built to commemorate Aayi on her selfless act that quenched the thirst of many people. The monument stands proudly in the heart of Pondicherry.
