Periyar National Park Wildlife
Periyar National Park is situated in the hills of the Western Ghats in the state of Kerala in south-west India. The centrepiece of Periyar National Park is the 5,500-hectare Periyar Lake, formed by the construction of a dam on the Periyar River in 1895.
The dam submerged a low-lying forest whose dead tree trunks are still just out of the water. Along the fringes of the lake are marshy areas with tall grasslands. This is one of the richest habitats for large mammals, as it provides both excellent cover and nourishment in the form of succulent shoots and grasses.Periyar, South India's most popular wildlife sanctuary, encompasses 777 sq. km, with a 26 sq. Km artificial lake created by the British in 1895.
The man-made Periyar Lake, created when the Mullaperiyar Dam was built, is one of the sanctuary's features. Boat safaris on the lake are another popular activity for tourists, providing a peaceful way to see animals. It has a number of hiking and nature walks that let visitors explore the deep forests while getting as close to and connected with animals as possible. There are guided nature walks that offer insights into the local environment.
With over 260 different species of birds documented in the vicinity, the sanctuary is a haven for bird lovers as well. Many permanent and migratory species, including kingfishers, hornbills, darters, and herons, can be seen by visitors.
Its home to bison, sambar, wild boar, languor, over 1000 elephants, and at least 46 tigers. This is an established tourist spot and can sometimes feel like Disneyland in the Ghats, but the mountain scenery on the road up, the lake cruise, and a jungle walk make for an enjoyable visit. Bring warm and waterproof clothing.

The museum is closed on all Mondays and during the celebration of Good Friday. The museum is open on all other days from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The months of March to May offer a good time to visit the museum.
