The backwaters of Alleppey probably need little introduction here- if you’re thinking of a trip to India you probably already have a mental image of the backwaters stowed away somewhere.
This stretch of backwaters, from wide rivers to small streams, backed by vast rice paddies and fringed with swaying coconut palms, is one of India’s most famous- and photographed- regions. While houseboats are a popular option, there are many other ways to explore this region- small boats, public ferries, or by bicycle or on foot along the endless riverside trails. This is a short tour which covers just Cochin and the backwaters if your time is very limited.
