Pillaiyarpatti - Temple

The ancient cave temple of Pillaiyarpatti was built over 1600 years ago by Mahendra Pallava. The temple is dedicated to the worship of Lord Ganesha and is located near Karaikudi, the Land of Chettinad.


Speciality of the Temple

The Pillaiyarpatti temple is the only temple in Tamil Nadu where the presiding deity is a 6-feet rock cut Ganesh. The trunk of the God is curled towards his right side and hence he is known as Valampuri Pillayar.

History

The temple is built by carving a cave in the Pillaiyarpatti hillocks. The cave temple might be over 2500 years old. The temple consists of 14 statues carved out of rock which stand for the ancient names for the Pillaiyarpatti place.

Temple timings

The temple functions between 6.00 am to 12.00 pm and between 4.00 pm to 8.00 pm on all days.

Dress Code

No specific dress code is recommended for a visit to this temple. Still, costumes covering upper arms and legs are suggested as a mark of respect to the temple customs.

Festivals

Monthly Chaturthi days are observed in this temple. The grandest festival celebrated here is the Vinayaka Chaturthi.
