History
One of the renowned Tamil Poetess Avvaiyar was passing through the place where the temple now stands. She is known far and wide to teach verses and impart knowledge to elders and children alike.
In the guise of a boy who was a shepherd, Lord Muruga sat on the Naaval tree. He saw that Avvaiyar was sitting under a tree and relaxing herself. He asked her if he could give her some fruits from the tree to fill her hunger.
When she agreed he asked her if she wanted cooked (Sutta pazham) or uncooked fruits (Sudatha pazham). Not understanding what either meant, Avvaiyar asked him for the cooked fruits. As he dropped the fruits on the ground to her, they were covered from the dust on the ground.
In order to clean it Avvaiyar tried to blow away the dust by mouth breathing it. The small boy then asked her whether the fruit was hot (Sutta pazham) since they were ripe. The poetess immediately understood the meaning as the Lord smiled down on her.
