Konark Sun Temple
Extremal architecture of the country greets you warmly to the heavenly place with exceptional craftsmanship by the artists of the nation, dating back to the 13th century. The temple was created by Narasingha Deva I of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty, who was a great fanatic of art and architecture. He raised this as a symbol of art to celebrate his military successes and naval victories he earned after conquering the cities across the sea. Do you believe that this 100-foot-high chariot-like temple complex was once believed to be 200 feet high? Yes, it's true! The records prove it, but later, due to natural disasters and the invasions of the Mughals, this temple got destroyed so many times that, fortunately, at least there are remnants. This gigantic monument makes us amazed while thinking about the main structure. Brace yourself for a sight that will leave you in awe - an extraordinary display of intricate artwork, splendid visuals, and a captivating theme that epitomizes the timeless beauty of Kalinga architecture. This masterpiece seamlessly blends the styles of Bindingu, Pidha, and Khakhara, infusing it with an irresistible charm. Affectionately known as Surya Devalaya, this majestic structure boasts a mesmerizing centrepiece featuring 24 colossal wheels, and meticulously carved horses, and is now safeguarded by the Archaeological Survey of India and has held the prestigious title of a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984. Before the construction of this temple, Konark was already renowned as a sacred site dedicated to the worship of the sun god Surya, with numerous temples and pilgrimage sites scattered throughout the area.

What makes the temple stand out? A journey into its uniqueness
This temple is truly a marvel, with its 12 pairs of intricately carved stone wheels, each measuring three meters wide. As you enter, you can still catch a glimpse of the lion's throne, although it is now in fragments. The exquisite carvings reveal that this place was dedicated to the worship of Surya. It's amazing to think that our ancestors in the 13th century had such advanced knowledge and skills to create such incredible mechanisms. The design of the wheels and sculptures not only showcases their craftsmanship but also their foresight in protecting the temple from the ravages of time and weather.
One of the most remarkable features is the hydraulic system used to pump water up to the tower for rituals, demonstrating the ingenuity of the skilled artisans. And can you believe they even used magnets to move heavy materials? It's mind-blowing! Although the main idol of Surya is no longer present, historical records mention that it used to float in the air, supported by magnets that attracted the surrounding stone. Just thinking about it fills us with awe for the incredible artistic talents of those who built this temple.
Moreover, elaborate use of florals like lotus and vines, as well as birds and animals with adverse geometric patterns in the stonework, can never be seen in Odisha’s temples, making the place a pioneering testament to explore and entice the Puri district of Odisha. So make sure to add this place to your bucket list if you are a spiritual person or an ardent art lover.
