History of Gangotri Temple?
As legend goes Goddess Ganga who flowed in the heavens, came to earth to absolve the sins of the predecessors of King Bhagiratha as a gift to his severe penance. His predecessors had all perished under the anger of Sage Kapila when they disturbed him during his meditation.
Entry/Darshan Time:
Gangotri remains closed in winter due to heavy snowfall. It remains open from May and is closed during the occasion of Diwali.
Dress Code:
No specific dress code is recommended for a visit to this temple. Still, costumes covering upper arms and legs are suggested as a mark of respect to the temple customs.
Festivals
Ganga Dussehra, Diwali and Akshaya Tritiya are celebrated here with much festivity.
