St. Angelo Fort

St. Angelo Fort, also referred to as Kannur Fort is situated in the Kannur district of Kerala. Poised on the shores of the Arabian Sea, it stands as one of the most picturesque forts in the region. Constructed in 1505 by the first Portuguese Viceroy of India, Dom Francisco de Almeida, in collaboration with the ruling Kolathiri Raja, this fort is affectionately known as Kannur Kota locally.

In 1790, control of the fort transitioned to the British, who designated it as the principal army center in the Malabar region. Today, Kannur Fort stands as a significant historical monument, meticulously preserved under the Archaeological Survey of India. The Kannur Cantonment, part of the network of 62 cantonments nationwide, underscores the military prowess embodied by Kannur Fort, situated within its confines.

The massive Fort features a triangular laterite structure, flanked by imposing bastions and encircled by a moat. Within its walls lie the remnants of an early oil lamp lighthouse, believed to be Kannur's first. Also present are the remnants of the British military Cantonment. The panoramic view from the fort encompasses the natural fishing harbour, Mappila Bay, and the enchanting Dharmadam Island, a beloved destination for tourists. Visitors can relish the splendid vistas of the Arabian Sea from the fort, especially during sunset, which offers a truly breathtaking experience. The lush green landscape provides an ideal backdrop for photography enthusiasts.
