Senate House
One of Chennai’s most prominent building that has gone down into history is the Senate house that stands with time inside the premises of the Madras University. Built by Robert Chisholm in the 19th century, the Senate monument near marina is a landmark. It was originally built for the Nawab of Arcot in the year 1885 and was designed by Robert Chisholm.
The structure is built with a blend of Byzantine architecture and Indo-Saracenic style. The strikingly colored domes with the perfect blend of brick red and white is eye catching for tourists. The state’s first Tamil Assembly was held in this building. During Queen Elizabeth’s visit to the Madras presidency, she was given a grand reception in this very monument.
The Senate house was used as a party hall by the British and also houses an underground level. This monument has been the site for the Senate meetings for over 125 years till 1965 after which the venue was shifted to another location. During the year 2010-11, after a duration of 45 years a senate meeting was once again held in this historical monument to retain its memory.
This monument is one among the major buildings that were built during the British reign and is an important hallmark of the colonial rule in India. This monument has been a witness to many great scholars and educationalists through its years.
