Jewish Synagogue

The Jewish Synagogue, also referred to as the Paradesi Synagogue, is a significant historical landmark in Kerala. Situated at the northern end of Jew Town in Mattancherry, Kochi, this synagogue was built in 1568 by the Paradesi Jews, Spanish-speaking Jews. It holds the distinction of being the oldest active synagogue among all Commonwealth Nations. Positioned adjacent to the Mattancherry Dutch Palace, it was constructed on land donated by the Maharajah of Cochin to the Malabari Yehuden or 'Yehuden Mappila' community.

Tourists from across the globe flock to this heritage site to marvel at its architectural beauty and historical importance. The Mattancherry Synagogue seamlessly combines European and traditional Kerala architectural styles, creating an atmosphere of mystique and tranquility throughout its premises. Its prominent clock tower stands as a striking feature of the structure. Inside, visitors can admire the intricately carved teak ark housing four Torah scrolls adorned with silver and gold, as well as the brass-railed pulpit and hand-painted Chinese porcelain tiles. An oriental rug, presented by the last king of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie, adds to its charm. Imported glass chandeliers from Belgium illuminate the synagogue, while exterior paintings depict the rich history of the Jewish community in India and their contributions to local society.
