Detailed Itinerary

  • Day 1 : Arrive Kolkata

Upon arrival in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), you will be met and transferred to your hotel in the heart of ‘old Calcutta’. Depending on your arrival time you may want to have this as a free day with no programme. Overnight in Kolkata.

  • Day 2 : Kolkata Sightseeing

After breakfast, your guide will meet you at your hotel and escort you on your sightseeing day of Kolkata. Places of interest in the city include The edifice in marble which is the Victoria Memorial – commissioned for the English queen’s 1901 diamond jubilee and completed some 20 years later, Park Street cemetery which is a warren of grand mausoleums and lush undergrowth, the Marble Palace which somehow manages to make all of Kolkata’s other grand structures seem staid and under-stated, Jain Temples in North Kolkata which combine marble inlay work (a-la the Taj Mahal), mirrored hallways, statues and a constant stream of worshippers and temples dedicated to the goddess Kali on the banks of the Hooghly River - your guide will be able to advise whether there are likely to be goat sacrifices taking place at the time of your visit. The choice of where to be when this ‘act of devotion’ takes place is then up to you! This is a wonderful day of many highlights and your guide will help you to get a feel for Kolkata and its fabulous history. Overnight in Kolkata.

  • Day 3 : Kolkata – FLY Bagdogra - Darjeeling

In the morning, transfer to Calcutta domestic airport for flight to Bagdogra around midday. You will be met on arrival and driven 3 hours to Darjeeling. In the evening soak up the atmosphere of this historic town. Overnight in Darjeeling.

(Alternatively you can come all the way by overnight train - on Day 2, depart Calcutta at night by train in air-conditioned 2nd class sleeper class to New Jaipalguri arriving around 08:00 and transfer to the famous Darjeeling Mountain Railway ‘Toy Train’ for all day journey to Darjeeling. This would be around 18 hours train travel in total).

  • Day 4 : Darjeeling

Sightseeing of Darjeeling includes a visit to Ghoom Monastery, Batasia Loop (a marvel of railway engineering), Tea Gardens, Himalayan Mountaineering Training Institute, the Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre and the Zoological Gardens. There is plenty to see and enjoy around Darjeeling and much of the town can be explored on foot. Overnight in Darjeeling.

  • Day 5 : Darjeeling - Rumtek

A very early start this morning but the reward is a panoramic view of the Himalayan mountain range from the top of nearby Tiger Hill as the dawn breaks and the first rays of the rising sun illuminate this incredible scene. Return to the hotel for breakfast and later in the morning check out and drive 4 hours to Sikkim, stopping on the way for lunch and reaching Rumtek by mid-afternoon. Surrounded by emerald green rice paddies and on the opposite side of the valley to the busy capital of Sikkim - Gangtok, Rumtek is a quiet and relaxing place to stay. Overnight in Rumtek.

  • Day 6 : Rumtek and Gangtok sightseeing

A full day to see the many interesting places around this beautiful valley, starting in Rumtek and visiting the extensive Tibetan Buddhist complex, and then heading to Gangtok later in the morning. The sights of Gangtok include scenic Ganesh Tok, the Institute of Tibetology, lovely Botanical Gardens and fascinating cottage industries. Overnight in Rumtek.

  • Day 7 : Rumtek - Excursion to Tsongo Lake

Nestled high in the mountains and only around 20km from the India/Tibet border is the picturesque Tsongo Lake. The road is steep but well maintained and requires a special permit to visit due to its proximity to the sensitive border area. Your visit here can include a ride around the lake on a yak! Return to Rumtek and enjoy the remainder of your time here at leisure. Overnight in Rumtek.

  • Day 8 : Rumtek – Kalimpong

Leaving Sikkim, make the 3 hour drive to Kalimpong and in the afternoon visit Dello Hills, Dr Graham's Childrens’ Home, Flower Nurseries, and handmade paper factory. Overnight in Kalimpong.
