Willingdon Island

Willingdon Island is one of India's largest artificial man-made islands, situated in the heart of Kochi. Named after the British Viceroy of India, Lord Willington, it was constructed in 1933 by architect Robert Bristow. The island serves as a vital link between the Kochi port and other national and international seaports. Initially created with soil dredged from the deepening of Vembanad Lake for the modern Kochi Port construction, it is currently under the administration of the Indian Navy and Cochin Port Trust.

Willingdon Island holds great significance as it houses the Port of Kochi, the Kochi Naval Base (Southern Naval Command of the Indian Navy), the Plant Quarantine Station, Custom House Cochin, and the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology. Additionally, it accommodates various other port-related establishments such as the Office of the Cochin Port Trust, Customs Office, Mercantile Marine Department, export-import offices, warehouses, hotels, and business centres. The island is also home to the Cochin Port Maritime Heritage Museum, as well as some of the city's finest hotels.

In addition to its commercial significance, Willingdon Island has emerged as a popular weekend getaway in Kochi. Enveloped by the tranquil backwaters of Kerala, it offers an ideal escape into nature's embrace. The most delightful way to experience the island is through leisurely strolls along its serene pathways, where one can marvel at the breathtaking vistas of the Arabian Sea. Ferry rides are a cherished activity, providing visitors with a splendid view of the island's beauty.
