Lakh Bahosi Bird Sanctuary
Every year between November and March, some fifty thousand waterfowl come to this sanctuary. For certain species, this wetland provides a nesting and breeding habitat. As a result, this refuge has drawn tourists and bird enthusiasts for a number of years. Even before you pass through the sanctuary's gates, there is enough to see. Look out for the flare of blue when an Indian roller lifts off from an overhead wire on the route to Lakh Bahosi. In the fields, keep an eye out for Egyptian vultures as well, though their buff colour may make them more difficult to see. In order to preserve the wetland and its aquatic fauna and flora, as well as the local and migratory birds that inhabit it, the Lakh Bahosi Bird Sanctuary was founded in 1988. The two sizable lakes in this refuge, Lakh and Bahosi, are named after nearby settlements.
Lakh Bahosi is very good for seeing a variety of ducks because of the twin lakes. Since Bahosi Lake is better kept than the others, start your visit there. Perches that protrude into the lake offer excellent spots from which to position your spotting scopes. You should focus your attention on the small island in the centre of the lake to see the larger birds that frequently perch here. A grey heron resting, an Eurasian spoonbill scrounging around in the shallow water for lunch, or, if you are lucky enough to be there in the winter, an entire herd of great white pelicans engaging in a friendly beak-throwing contest are all easily spotted.
If you want to see the birds up close, wander around Bahosi Lake on the walking pathway. Look for hoopoes, flycatchers, wagtails, and pipits along the walk, which is bordered by trees and plants. Little grebes swimming in and out of the water hyacinth and shimmering bronze-winged jacanas are plainly visible at the lake's shores. During the winter, one can also frequently see the spotted redshank, which travels all the way from Scandinavia to India.
