Rajsamand Lake also known as the Rajsamudra Lake, is a popular tourist destination situated 66 kilometers north of Udaipur, near the town of Rajsamand. Constructed in the 17th century by Maharana Raj Singh, the lake spans across the Gomati, Kelwa, and Tali Rivers, with a catchment area of approximately 196 square miles. Among the five famous lakes in Mewar, the Rajsamand Lake is nestled between the cities of Rajnagar and Kanroli, with the River Gomti serving as its primary water source. The Rajsamand Lake, stretching 4 miles long and 1.7 miles wide, is a true marvel at a depth of about 60 feet.
The white marble embankment at the southern end, known as Nauchowki, boasts intricate carvings and is adorned with five toranas and chhatris. The Nauchowki is adorned with images of Gods, the Sun, birds, chariots, and other detailed carvings. The Ghats, or stone steps leading to the lake, hold the history of Mewar inscribed on 21 marble stones. The stone steps and marble terraces gracefully touch the water, creating a serene atmosphere. One of the most enchanting aspects of this lake is its captivating beauty during sunset, as the gentle light of the setting sun casts a magical shimmer on its clear waters. History of Rajsamand Lake -
The Rajsamand Lake was created through the construction of dams on three rivers - Gomti, Kelwa, and Tali, during the years 1662 to 1676 AD, during the rule of Maharana Raj Singh I. In response to a devastating drought in 1661, the Maharaja initiated the construction of the dam and lake to not only better manage such crises in the future but also to provide employment opportunities for the local community that had been severely impacted by the drought.
