Mullaperiyar Dam

Mullaperiyar Dam is a masonry gravity dam built across the famous Periyar River in the Idukki district of the Indian state of Kerala. Positioned at an elevation of 881 meters (2,890 feet) above sea level, it stands amidst the Cardamom Hills of the Western Ghats in Thekkady, in the Idukki district. Constructed between 1887 and 1895 by John Pennycuick, the dam was also part of an agreement to redirect water eastwards to the Madras Presidency area (now Tamil Nadu). It boasts a height of 176 feet from the foundation and a length of 1,200 feet.

Positioned at the confluence of the Mullayar and Periyar rivers, the dam is aptly named Mullaperiyar. Although situated in Kerala along the Periyar River, the dam is operated and maintained by the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu.

The primary purpose of the Mullaperiyar Dam is to transfer water from the Periyar River to the Vaigai River basin in Tamil Nadu for irrigation and power generation. A tunnel conveys water from Periyar Lake to a forebay near Kumily town in Kerala, and then another tunnel carries it across the Western Ghats to a canal leading to the Vaigai River. The water is distributed to different areas in Tamil Nadu via a network of canals and channels.

The renowned Periyar National Park surrounds the reservoir of the dam, providing habitat to numerous endangered species of animals and birds. This protected area is designated as a biodiversity hotspot.
