This reservoir serves as a lifeline, supplying water to over 75,000 hectares of land and supporting agriculture and irrigation in the region.

Interestingly, the dam is called "Hirakud Daughter" because of its resemblance to the famous Hirakud Dam. Both dams have matching architectural styles with a curved shape and angled spillways. The fascinating history of Mandira Dam is the dam raised by the Hirakud Project Authority across the Sankh River, a tributary of the Brahmani River.
