Kanakakunnu Palace, one of Kerala's renowned palaces, sits at the heart of Thiruvananthapuram city, close to the famed Napier Museum. Constructed during the reign of the illustrious King of Travancore, His Highness Sree Moolam Thirunal Maharaja, this palace initially served as the guest house for Travancore kings. Presently, it is under the ownership of the Kerala State Government. Perched atop a small hill, the palace is enveloped by lush green meadows on all sides. Adjacent to the palace, there's a well-kept ground where numerous cultural events take place annually.
Kanakakunnu Palace stands as a testament to the colonial era's architectural legacy, boasting typical Kerala-style architecture highlighted by its captivating red façade. It once served as the primary venue for royal banquets and houses remarkable antique pieces, exquisite royal furniture, and grand crystal chandeliers. Within the palace complex are two auditoriums: the Nishagandhi open-air auditorium and the Sooryakanthi auditorium. Annually, from October to March, the Department of Tourism hosts the prestigious Nishagandhi festival, a nationwide dance festival, at the Nishagandhi open-air auditorium.
