The park was formally titled Sawai Madhopur Game Sanctuary in 1955 and then transformed into the Tiger Reserve in 1973. The sanctuary also houses a 1000-year-old fort with big, bulky gates and huge precincts, which was believed to have been built in 944 AD and is now considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Inside the fort, there are numerous temples that visitors can admire.
