Is Yoga just twisting and bending? What is Yoga
Yoga is a way of life! A complete path. The western world is often confused with the real meaning of Yoga and use commercial terms like Recreational Yoga and create videos with the information available on the internet. But Yoga is the Complete Path of a human being to experience life to its fullest potential.
Anything that happens consciously within you and brings takes to reality is YOGA. Yoga literally means Union. It means uniting with the already existing Nature along with an internal union within oneself. Mammals, trees, mangoes, stone, you, me, and a worm all are from the same soil, Earth.
So it is not just sitting with your legs crossed and closing your eyes. Let us understand this first and understand what Yoga is to humanity. It is more about the universe and a selfless way of life to approach life the way it is.
The Origin of Yoga
Researchers suggest Yoga is more than 10,000 years old but concrete facts date back to about 5,000 years ago. There have been four periods of Yoga so far – Pre-Classical Yoga, Classical Yoga, Post-Classical Yoga, and Modern Yoga. As literary Yogic scriptures like Bhagavad Gita dominated the Pre-Classical era, Pathanjali’s Yogic Sutras were acts of revelation.
Tamil Sangam poets like Agasthiyar have initiated the basis of Yogic concepts while Pathanjali is considered as the father of Yoga and his concepts are relevant even today. The Tantra Yoga came in the post-classical era and that is what Hatha Yoga means which is totally about the physicality of being. People like B.K.S Iyengar and Swami Vivekananda made Hatha Yoga a successful practice in India and it resonated strongly in the West too.
